The rock embankments, protects the area from floods and waves and make an enchanting spot for enjoying the sea breeze, the fishing activities and gathering of oysters etc.

Balathiruthy/Kandalkadu (Mangroves)

Vallikunnu, an enchanting place of mind boggling scenic beauty is the perfect place for total relaxation, a jolly holiday or a quiet honey moon.

The beautiful mangroves of Balathiruthy protects this place of natural beauty from the natural calamities like flood, tsunami, earth quake , etc.

Balathiruthy is a group of 3 small islands -------------- in the lap of nature just before where the Kadalundi Puzha joins Arabian Sea. This enchanting island has the panoramic view of the Kandalkadu surrounding it. These forests protect this island from its havoc of floods and other natural calamities. These forests are also a heaven for a variety of birds and animals in the island. The harshness of salt is also less in this area and hence compared to Goa with its natural beauty, panoramic view of surrounding forest, cool breeze and bird songs. Balathiruthy has a wide scope for tourism promotions in this area.

The Vallikunnu Grama Panchayath during People's Planning has succeeded in providing employment to the inmates of the island through mussel farming. The oyster farming has become one of the main source of income for the islanders. Both men and women of island are involved in the sprouting business.

It is exciting to watch the process of breeding as it is spread on cloth wound over a rope, or on the rocks on the river mouth. They stick on to these and later on are to be plucked from the base. September- October months are the most ideal time for oyster farming. Oyster dishes have gained popularity all over the world as it is a diet with high rates of calcium and protein.
